What to Expect During Custom Cabinet Installation, From Delivery to the Final Reveal

Most people picture cabinet installation as the day the boxes go on the wall. You order beautiful cabinets, a truck shows up, and a few hours later your kitchen is done. The finished boxes get all the attention, but here is what surprises homeowners: the steps that decide whether cabinets look truly custom are the ones you will never see. Leveling to the floor, scribing to the wall, and fastening into structure matter more to the final result than the boxes themselves. Before anything gets hung: delivery, inspection, and letting the wood settle
Installation starts before a single cabinet touches the wall. When the cabinets arrive, we inspect every box against the plan, checking sizes, finishes, door swings, and any shipping damage, so nothing surprises us halfway through the job. Then, when the schedule allows, we let the cabinets sit in the home for a stretch before installing them. That pause is not wasted time. Wood is hygroscopic, meaning it constantly trades moisture with the surrounding air. According to the U.S. Department of Energy's Building America program, wood settles at roughly 6 to 9 percent moisture content at 70 degrees and 30 to 50 percent relative humidity, but move that same wood to 80 percent humidity and its moisture content more than doubles to almost 16 percent. On the Gulf Coast that swing is real, and as wood takes on and gives up moisture it swells and shrinks. Letting cabinets come to equilibrium with the home they will live in, before they are fastened tight to walls and to each other, is one of the quiet steps that keeps doors aligned and joints tight through a humid Houston summer.
Measuring twice: verifying the layout against the real room
Before we hang anything, we re-check the room against the design. Walls get measured again, we confirm the appliance openings, plumbing, and electrical line up with the plan, and we mark exactly where each cabinet lands. This is also when we find the room's quirks: a wall that bows, a floor that slopes, a corner that is not square. Almost no room is perfectly square or perfectly level, and catching that now, on paper and on the wall, is far easier than discovering it with a cabinet already in your hands.
Reference lines: the layout you never see but always benefit from
Here is the first invisible step that separates a clean install from a rough one. We find the highest point of the floor along each run of cabinets, then measure up and snap a level reference line on the wall for the base cabinets and another for the uppers. Every cabinet gets set to those lines, not to the floor and not to the ceiling, because neither of those is truly straight. We also mark the wall studs. From here on, the lines on the wall, not the surfaces around them, are the truth we build to. Get these lines right and everything downstream falls into place; get them wrong and every gap and tilt compounds down the run.
Why we hang the upper cabinets first
We install the upper wall cabinets before the base cabinets. It seems backward until you have done it: with no base cabinets in the way, we can stand close to the wall, lift each upper into position, and clamp, shim, and fasten it without reaching over a row of finished boxes. Uppers are started from a corner or another key point, held to the reference line, checked for level and plumb, then screwed to the studs. Neighboring cabinets are lifted in one at a time, their face frames clamped tight to each other so the fronts sit in a single clean plane, then fastened. Doing the uppers first also protects your new base cabinets and countertops from the dings that come with wrestling heavy boxes overhead.
Setting and leveling the base cabinets
Base cabinets go in next, worked off that same high point of the floor. Because floors are rarely flat, we slide thin shims under and behind the boxes until each one sits perfectly level and plumb, then join the cabinets to each other and to the wall. A run of base cabinets that is dead level is what lets a countertop sit flat without rocking, lets drawers close on their own, and lets doors hang even. Skip the shimming and every one of those problems shows up later at the countertop.
Scribing: making a straight cabinet meet a wall that isn't
This is the step that most separates custom installation from a big-box drop-in. Cabinets are built straight and square. Walls are not. Where a cabinet or a finished end panel meets a wall, we scribe it: we trace the wall's actual contour onto the cabinet edge, then trim to that line so the cabinet follows the wall's bumps and waves with a tight, shadow-free seam. Where cabinets stop short of a wall or each other, we cut filler strips from matching material to bridge the gap cleanly rather than leave an obvious void. Scribing and fillers are slow, quiet handwork, and they are exactly why a well-installed kitchen looks like it grew out of the room instead of being parked in it.
Fastening into structure, not drywall
A cabinet full of dishes is heavy, and the finished ones carry that load every day for decades. We fasten cabinets through their backs into the wall studs and structure, never into drywall alone, which cannot hold the weight. This is another invisible step: no one sees the screws, but they are the difference between cabinets that stay put for the life of the kitchen and cabinets that slowly pull away from the wall. It is also why marking those studs earlier mattered.
Doors, drawers, hardware, and toe kicks
With every box level, plumb, and anchored, the cabinets come to life. We hang the doors and set the drawers, then adjust each one on its hinges and slides so the gaps between doors and drawer fronts are even and consistent across the whole kitchen, an alignment that is only possible because the boxes underneath are true. Then handles and knobs go on, drilled to a consistent layout, and the toe kicks and any trim, crown, or light rail are installed and scribed to finish the job. These details are small, but even gaps and level hardware are exactly what the eye reads as quality.
The final reveal and the punch-list walkthrough
The last step is a walkthrough with you. We open every door and drawer, check that each one operates smoothly and sits even, confirm the finish is clean, and build a punch list of anything to touch up. Then we clean up and hand the kitchen back. By the time you see the final reveal, the parts that took the most skill are already hidden behind the boxes. That is the whole point: the leveling, scribing, and fastening you cannot see are what make the cabinets you can see look truly custom.
